Corporate Volkswagen Emission Scandal

Question: Talk about the Corporate Volkswagen Emission Scandal. Answer: Presentation: In September 2015, Volkswagen was asserted by the Environmental Protection Agency of evading US emanation tests. It was seen by EPA that the organization had deliberately composed TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) diesel motors, so as to start explicit outflow tests just during discharges assessment in research facilities. The organization had provisioned around 4.8 billion for cost recharging that was expected to review cars with cheat gadgets in millions. Eventually, the organization experienced lost 2.5bn in October 2015. Moreover, as the organization used the thrashing gadget on its four-lakh vehicles to swindle outflow tests, EPA additionally forced a colossal punishment of $37500 per vehicle for negation of guidelines (Spence, 2015). This prompted the decrease of the companys stock by 20%, along with the abdication of the companys CEO. Because of the outrage, VW turned into the easy prey of the controllers in different nations. The stock cost plunged mutiple/third as the orga nization needs to declare a quarterly loss of 2.5 billion. The negative impacts outperformed the very reasoning. The familiarity with the outrage raised solid worries over contamination being radiated from the vehicles and scrutinized the moral legitimacy. Moral issues The embarrassment of Volkswagen can be assessed as a business morals case and can be supposed to be a double dealing or an issue as far as supportability. It is even an instance of administration, corporate administration, culture, and so on. In particular, it is an issue of CSR in light of the fact that the social duty of the organization that involves client and open, controllers control, the obligation of the earth like contamination, guidelines of discharge and financial obligation like fall in the value esteem, fall in the estimation of stocks, and so on (Jonsson et. al, 2009). The main moral issue emerging from the Volkswagen case isn't just the dismissal of EPA laws and guidelines yet in addition the development of a gadget to dispose of them viably. Besides, the organization didn't find a way to control the huge measures of nitrogen oxides that were produced by its vehicles into the earth (Nelson, 2016). Moreover, this deliberate outrage clearly conflicts with their own benef its of setting up a greener vehicle. Last, yet not the least, the significant partners of the organization was additionally severely influenced because of such outrage. These incorporate investors, representatives, the executives, vehicle proprietors, and the diesel business in general (Suddaby Greenwood, 2005). These issues obviously propose that Volkswagen negated the standards of morals, which was at first endorsed by the organization itself. Be that as it may, it neglected to do as such, in this way upsetting the smooth execution inside the organization by pulling in correctional arrangements and firing business worker relationship all in all (Volkswagen, 2015). Standards, Principles, and Values There are different standards, standards, and qualities pertinent to the embarrassment. Right off the bat is equity wherein the organization bamboozled the buyers since they paid a premium for vehicles, which let out less outflows. In any case, it ended up being the inverse as emanations were multiple times more. Furthermore is the obligation factor, which expresses that in spite of owing a huge duty towards the general public and nature, the organization didn't find a way to satisfy its obligations (Das, 2013). Thirdly is the self-governance factor wherein the producers of the gadget were inadequate to settle on self-moral choices because of outrageous weights from the administration. Last is helpfulness wherein the organization just gave due need to itself and didn't offer assistance or favorable position to its customers (Klinger, 2016). Partners and their interests Numerous partners like clients, accomplices, society, and the capital market were adversely impacted by the Volkswagen outrage. The customers were double-crossed in view of the discolored brand picture of the organization that ended up being a significant trick. The prompt effects of the embarrassment could be effectively detectable when the organization shares devalued by 33% (Freeman Harrison, 2010). Consequently, comparable to financial specialists and investors, this was a key mishap for them since they had affirmed extraordinary trust, tremendous assets, and expectations into the organization, subsequently clearing a path for the loss of certainty and estimations of these partners (Fracarolli Lee, 2016). Also, partners like workers, providers, and colleagues of the organization altogether offer need to wellbeing, salary, consumer loyalty, and unbiased chances (Ballou et. al, 2006). Indeed, even these worries were impacted due to the vulnerability with respect to the companys exe cution. The worries of society that incorporates civil specialists, law designers and so on have additionally been seen to agree as far as atmosphere, condition defending, and vehicle wellbeing (Klinger, 2016). Subsequently, the worries of every one of these partners have been exceptionally put in question by the outrage. Purpose for the embarrassment As indicated by different examinations, when the organization guaranteed open of another diesel line vehicle that is eco-friendly, green, and would offer better execution, it had little information on what will occur later on (DeVilliers Van, 2011). It contributed billions of euros to grow such an innovation, that would beat different contenders, yet sooner it began confronting different troubles. Along the way, delays began occurring in the improvement of such innovation and the downstream pioneers were scared of referencing issues about the venture to their managers (Fracarolli Lee, 2016). Consequently, the architects were left with no choice than to build up a program that could just dishonestly breeze through the assessment for administrative confirmation. In any case, this suggests the vehicles were neither in consistence with the law nor it conveyed execution that was advertised by the organization. This expresses the senior chiefs more likely than not built up a feeling of dre ad that cleared route for such a catastrophe. Thus, bookkeeping issues like burden of fine up to $18 billion on the organization, 2.5billion misfortune because of the outrage that prompted the decrease in the organization shares by 20%, decay implied of generosity and trust driving towards devastation of brand picture, and quality and deals in general, and so forth must be experienced by the organization. It doesn't make a difference whether it was deliberate or unexpected on the grounds that corporate morals is indispensable for powerful outcomes (Balbir, 2016). CSR (Corporate Sustainability Reporting) The VW outrage features different bits of the benefits of CSR revealing. It recommends that CSR might be exceptionally huge and improving for the organizations. According to the CSR reports since 1990, it has been seen that organizations have been progressively straightforward corresponding to human rights, natural practices, and effects. In any case, Volkswagen had neglected to embrace such detailing, in this manner driving towards different challenges. The devaluation of the companys shares unmistakably features the criticalness of CSR detailing by portraying the perils of lying about social qualities (Nzuve, 2011). Hence, the organization must acknowledge its obligation regarding which it was at risk and detailing is its essential obligation, even it isn't obligatory (Elson et. al, 2015). Had it detailed about its exercises through CSR, the situation would have been unique. In this manner, it very well may be presumed that maintainability revealing must be directed later on, considering the ongoing corporate embarrassments. The Volkswagen outrage reveals insight that both deliberate CSR measures and government guidelines will be wasteful if the corporate administrators don't build up noteworthy suspicions about moral lead. As the administration specialists can't have power over the organizations conduct consistently, CSR detailing can distil that certainty that can support people in general comparable to law consistence and more extensive social expectations (Janssen, 2013). Subsequently, the whole thought of CSR must be improved, not dismissed. Both the executives report and announcement are basic records fused in the yearly report of an organization. On one hand, the chiefs report gives pertinent data about the state of the organization, along with its consistence with a lot of CSR (corporate social duty), budgetary, and bookkeeping gauges, and then again, the executives affirmation offers the assessment of the executives in regards to guaranteed consistence under Corporations Regulations, Accounting Standards, and different accord perspectives of the Group. Executives report is significant as it helps investors in settling on educated choices in future. They can see if the organization has sufficient assets and whether it can clear paths for additional extension in future. What's more, as chiefs assertion is marked as per their goals, they are committed to guarantee that the companys records are exact and satisfactory through the presentation of legitimate bookkeeping strategies and controls. Along these lines, it is requ ired as it builds up trust in the psyches of open that sound strategies and procedures are used inside the organization. The general bookkeeping condition whenever followed by Virgin Australia Group. The benefits of the business are the assets of the organization and are produced from two fundamental sources. In short resources = liabilities in addition to the value of the proprietors. Proprietor value includes incomes, increases, and commitments less the costs, misfortunes and withdrawals. KPMG review the budget reports of the organization. It gave an assessment that the companys fiscal summaries were as per the Corporations Act, 2001 and Australian Accounting Standards, in this manner giving a valid and reasonable perspective on its presentation and money related position. It was additionally opined that the budget summaries conformed to the IFRS necessities. During the year, KPMG likewise offered different administrations

1. Please describe how you would structure your approach and the technology that would be required to acquire the data necessary to identify Amazon’s global carbon emissions. The Earth’s climate has been rapidly warming for the past several decades due to the burning of fossil fuels, with the subsequent release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHG). Global climate change has already caused glaciers and sea ice to melt, plant and animal ranges to shift, sea level rise to accelerate, oceans to acidify, and droughts and heat waves to intensify. Indeed, climate change can be considered to be the main threat to the future well-being of humanity and our planet. The involvement of corporations is critical to address climate change since they are one of the main producers of greenhouse gases, with the 2,500 largest global corporations accounting for more than 20% of global GHG emissions. Hence, corporations are key players in combating global climate change. A company’s carbon emissions can also be called a â€Å"carbon footprint,† which is a measure of the total amount of carbon emissions that is either directly and indirectly caused by a company’s activities. The identification and reporting of Amazon’s carbon footprint consists of the following steps: (1) definition of the boundaries, or scope, of carbon emissions; (2) quantification of these carbon emissions; (3) and subsequent reporting of carbon emissions. The only way to handle this task is the implementation of an automatic system for data analytics. Data will comprise of old calls of a particular caller, the current call record, and fraud results. Data mining tools are used to suspected call records mined from information haystack will be compared to records and display the results(Orlaith, 2016). Possible outcomes The resulting outcomes are scripts of call information branded as being fraud related. When the data analytics tools are implemented, there will be a higher possibility of detecting fraud in telecommunication, stop progress cases and a consequent investigation to safeguard the interests of the organization. The prevalent costs are the primary inhibiting factor for the implementation. A proper application of data analytics tools will enhance the process of achieving the overall goals of the organization. A successful process also improves the image of an organization to the publics and the investors(Omar, 2017). Few firms that are financially viable in the country have already adopted a fraud detection most reporting positive progress disregard of the accompanying costs in development. It forms a significant achievement in growth. All human and robotic fraud attempts are maintained(Salgado, 2016). Background of the problem Both the wireless systems and the systems that use transmission lines from telecommunication systems. Telecom fraud is an unauthorized usage in which the user has not yet paid for the services. Monitoring systems provide the apparatus and tools to detect the potential usages of such applications. Access to information is becoming essential in every field of business, government, and science with much increase in the use of wireless systems. Fraudulent usage of telecommunication systems is also on the rise causing up to a total of not less than $600 billion in a year, and the high figures have created a desirability for a system to detect and prevent those activities(Monde, 2017). The varieties of fraud include tumbling fraud using different IDs which are generated to place different calls. It is easy if pre-call verifications for the IDs are not conducted(Zolotov, 2017). The user identifications will then remain to be unassigned and cannot be billed. The calling card fraud is done by misappropriating a valid call card number and using it to make calls with billing done to the unsuspecting subscriber. Cloning fraud is associated with cellular systems through plundering a valid customer identification, cloning the ID into a mobile phone which is used for the billing made at the subscriber's ID. A tumbling-clone fraud hybrids the tumbling and the cloning type scams. Cellular phone calls are placed on successive customers' IDs all programmed into the telephone. The tumbling-clone fraud is harder to detect among all the others. Another type is the subscriber fraud conducted by a rather valid customer(Monde, 2017). The customer uses a system without the intention o f paying and continues to do so until access to the service is blocked. The current nature of the problem The analytics tools available include the spectral clustering technique, the cross-object relationships, the Recency, Frequency and Monetary method (RFM) and the Customer Lifetime Value. System implementation poses tremendous operating costs for business and hence acquisition is limited to big telecommunication companies. Furthermore, the nature of the problem is complex and needs to be regularly reviewed due to the flexible nature of fraud. Few service providers are available in the industry to be sourced which makes the prices to rise higher. The database nature of the fraud has also made it difficult to outsource services from external solution providers. The delicate natures of business and industry competitiveness call for extreme privacy in internal issues(Lopez, 2017). Data analytics scenario and methodology Formulation of the problem and data mining techniques The Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) is the leading approach used in data mining because of its effectiveness. The other methodology for conducting the process is the SEMMA. The ASUM-DM, Analytics Solution Unified Method for Data Mining has been released lately to refine and extend the CRISP-DM. The phases of the CRISP-DM will give the business and data understanding, preparation of data, modeling, evaluation, and deployment. In the telecommunication industry, it is hard to the next date, time and duration of the genuine subscribers(Jaratsri, 2017). Subscribers do not have a standard frequency of making calls even for the biggest customers. In solving the problem, customers are categorized using the loyalties perceived on them. The method will help to classified by their most likely next use. Data must be collected and analyzed according to types, the method of recording, their storage formats, and any other possible changes. The clustering method is the best to use when classifying subscribers data. It will ease prediction to analyze the data and a model that will be useful in future decision making. The analysis is done by the predictions for specific categories(Lersel, 2017). Data collection and organization strategy The Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining lays down the process for tackling the fraud problem. The data collected is prepared for the modeling stage. Data collection is followed by familiarization to identify the quality problems and get insights. Subsets are created to form hypotheses about hidden information. Preparation of data covers all activities concerning the subscribers to enable construction of a final dataset. It can be done for multiple times. The processes are done in data preparation cover past call records in tables, selection of the subscribers' characteristics and a transformation succeeded by cleaning of data in preparation for modeling. In the modeling phase, several techniques are available(Lersel, 2017). The parameters are attuned to optimal values. All the methods available for data mining will solve the same problem of fraudulent users in telecommunication and seem to have similar data from requirements. Data mining methods The Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) It has six phases as indicated below which are non-directional. The process is continuous even after finding the solution. It is required that the business is defined regarding its objectives. The purpose of the firm is the detection of fraud. The standard decision model is used as a design plan. The preliminary data collected must be analyzed to identify problems with its quality. Data subsets are also formed here. Data is cleaned up and attributed for a multiple of times. The final set of data is prepared to be fed in the modeling tools. The modeling methods have preset standard values with similar and specific data requirements(Itani, 2017). Models are built for data analysis according to the quality parameter. The steps executed in the construction of the models must be thoroughly reviewed to achieve telecommunication objectives. At deployment, data is presented to the administrators depending on their requirements. Report generation, data scoring, and data mining from things that should be considered. The client telecommunication firms are made to develop an appropriate business strategy. Sample, Explore, Modify, Model and Assess (SEMMA) model It is another statistics and computer intelligence support software that guides data mining. It is a logical functional tool for organizing data in a generalized manner(Longjun, 2017). Sampling involves selection of a large set of data for modeling sufficient information. Data is partitioned into small samples for efficiency. Data is then analyzed to understand relationships between the variables and the anomalies. Modification selects, create and transform the variables as the modeling phase creates models that will provide the desired output. Assessment is done to view the results regarding usefulness and reliability(Figueiras, 2016). The criticism on SEMMA is its focus on modeling alone. Analytics Solution Unified Method for Data Mining (ASUM-DM) It is an extension to CRISP-DM refined by the IBM computer company. It covers all the properties of the preluding application and extends it with a functionality of more detailed smaller sets which most analysts label as too complex reducing its popularity(Hofmann, 2016). Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD) It describes technologies and methods to assist people in extracting information that is useful from volumes of information that expands rapidly. Evaluation of the results The assessment of results calls for an evaluation of data. The mining of results will be done hand-in-hand with the principles of business success. The models are acceptable according to world standards. The process is not a final process but a continuous process. The next thing is to outlay the solution and then formulate a decision. The model results must be tested on a simulation platform to access the accuracy levels(Darshana, 2017). Deployment of results into business The final phase of the CRISP-DM methodology is the implementation of the decision. It should be done within the first month to avoid a further loss of the business. The business has to develop appropriate strategies to comply the analysis solutions(Fahmi, 2017). Continuous monitoring and maintenance must be effected because the fraud environment evolves each day. The business findings must be documented in a final report for presentation to the client. An expert review of the documentation will eliminate possible errors. An error free documentation will provide the reference in succeeding analysis to prevent a repeat of the already perfectly handled areas which could create additional costs for the business and waste time on the already handled issue. Records also facilitate tracking of the identified fraud cases(Al-asadi, 2017). The client will be required to keep a regular contact with the analysts for support on any needed assistance. The Storm Essay, Research Paper Analysis of? The Storm? In McKnight Malmar? s scaring narrative? The Storm? she weaves a violent storm and slaying together to rise the hideous fright that engulfs Janet Willsom. The storm is a combination of female parent nature, Janet? s emotions and her heartbreaking quandary. The narrative begins with Janet Willsom coming home from a holiday seeing her sister who is really ill. She has come back a hebdomad early trusting her hubby, Ben, would be home so she could surprise him but he? s non. There is a really strong storm blossoming outside and Janet gets concerned with Ben? s whereabouts. She wonders if he is still in the metropolis working tardily. There is a missive addressed to Ben on the tabular array but she destroys it because she knows that this missive is likely no different from the others that have been sent to him in the yesteryear. As the storm got worse, she started to hear footfalls and she thought she saw a face at the window in the life room. Be this ghostly face in the window her hubby? Recognizing that possibly it was her imaginativeness, she went to the cellar to acquire wood to do a fire. The cellar was moist and dark and there was a iciness in the air because the cellar door was broad unfastened. Janet wondered if the air current was so strong that it blew it unfastened or if there was an interloper. She grabbed the doorhandle and closed it every bit hard as she could because the air current was so strong. The fire wood was in the corner so she walked towards it. All of a sudden she noticed that her old bole was opened merely a cleft, she walked to over to it and threw it unfastened. Liing in there was a organic structure of a adult female in a ruddy frock with a adult male? s diamond ring on her finger. In panic Janet ran up the cellar stepss, locked the door and reinforced it with a heavy wooden chair. Simutainously she heard glass shattering from the basement window and ran into the life room to quiet her frights. Soon after, Janet? s hubby Ben walked in the forepart door soaking moisture, dirty and picket. She started to state her hubby Thursday vitamin E events that had happened that dark. He found it difficult to believe that there was a sneak skulking around outside and that there was a dead organic structure in the bole. Janet took him to the cellar, they looked in the bole but there was nil in it. She wondered if she was seeing things until she saw the same diamond ring on her hubby? s finger that had been on the adult female? s finger. She realizes that her hubby killed the adult female. With all of the fright and strength in her organic structure she runs up the cellar steps, disregarding Ben shouting her name she runs out of the house and neer looks back. The narrative gave me a feeling that I was at that place out of sight from her but watching her every move. It was besides from a really cliff-hanging third-person point of position. Throughout the narrative she thinks about all the good qualities her hubby has and at the same clip is losing him. The letters that are addressed to him says New York City on the envelope ; he is ever angry about those letters but Janet neer sees the contents of those letters. My theory is that these letters are from his kept woman ; she was blackjacking him to go forth his married woman. There was a batch of accent on the storm itself, She starts to go discerning about the storm because of its increasing power? The air current hammered at the door and the Windowss, and the air was full of the sound of H2O, rushing in the troughs, pouring from the leaders, thumping on the roof. ? ( 244 ) I feel that there is a storm outside but there besides a storm traveling on from within Janet because she has uncertainty about her hubby? s fidelity. As for the apparitional face in the window and the dead adult female in the bole ; her hubby killed his kept woman, heard his married woman walking in the front door, put the dead organic structure in the bole and ran out the cellar door to the exterior. He was the face Janet saw in the window. Once she went to the cellar to acquire fire wood and left, he couldn? T open the cellar door, so he broke the window, took the dead organic structure and disposed of it. Janet yearns for her hubby to protect her from the storm and in the terminal she takes comfort from the storm.

Free Essays on Intersex People

Socialization is learning to be human. Following the movie I watched in class about intersex people I’ve learned that fitting into society is not always easy. For interesex people Just finding out who they are is whole challenge with in one self. There are people waling around every day that look like you and me who are born intersex. Intersex people or Hermaphrodites are people born with both the male and female sex chromosomes and cannot be distinguish as either male or female. When we look in the mirror it is clear-cut that we are either male or female. For some people it is not that simple. Someone Like Max, Tammy, and Patrick who were born with an unknown sex has to live a life of sometimes pain and uncertainly not knowing where he or she belong as part of society. There are thousand of people born a year that are intersex Because of discomfort brought to them many are ashamed and hide who they really are. One example is brought to us by both of the first two characters in the movie Max and Tammy. At the age of 21 they both find someone who see them as a female so right away they jump into marriage. Not even trying to find them selves someone who they can feel comfortable with but rather taking a life partner as face value because they feel that they might not have a second chance at it. Only knowing those two stories told by both max and T ammy I can just imagine how many other jump into the same situation. Communications Essay about Running a Night Club

Communications about Running a Night Club - Essay Example existing for such a business, however the disadvantage could be that there will be a higher level of competition for the business that is proposed to be set up. Another issue that needs to be considered is the question of overheads. Some very popular nightclubs in Dublin, such as the Bodytonic, actually started off in a small sweaty basement, but it is now a thriving nightclub with many branches. Therefore, starting off small appears to be a better business proposition because it would keep the overhead costs down. There would be lower maintenance expenses, because it could be started in the basement of a private house and can later be expanded after it starts making money. Since the private house in question may be a little out of the way, it may be necessary to carefully advertise the opening of the new business and to post signs and directions to reach the nightclub. This could be done using some cheap form of advertisement, such as flyers or word of mouth rather than incurring a great deal of expense for advertising in the well known magazines. Some large arrows and hand written signs strategically placed could also serve to provide the right directions, so that the party crowd can move from the general nightclub area to the proposed establishment. One of the most important factors that must be taken into consideration is the current recessionary atmosphere, where most businesses are struggling to pull in enough customers to sustain their expenses. Therefore, the club fees may need to be low at first, so that it encourages people to come and sample the music. If the advertised entry fees are lower than what is available at other clubs, it would provide an incentive for customers to choose the new establishment instead. Also, other promotional measures may need to be considered, such as for example, allowing free entry for a partner, so that this encourages couples to come to the new nightclub rather than patronizing the already existing ones. Analysis & Critique of Canadian Court System Essay

Analysis & Critique of Canadian Court System - Essay Example These models are the inquisitorial and the adversary models. The Canadian Court System mostly applies the adversarial process in its legal processes. Adversarial justice system is the best approach to addressing justice and equality in court systems and the Canadian Courts should continue using it. Reasons for the Adversary Justice System The ultimate concern of the adversary court system is to ensure equal treatment between the prosecution and defense. The court assumes a neutral position and acts as referee between the two parties. This system requires all parties to adhere to the law in responding to different issues in the court. For instance, police officers must use the procedures that the law accepts to obtain evidence from suspects or the accused. The court will determine whether the police used the appropriate ways of gathering evidence that are recognized by the law and are free from deception and other malpractices. The neutral state of the court ensures a fair trial for t he accused (see Law Commission). Adversary system stresses on strict observance of the law in seeking justice for all parties involved in a case. This characteristic gives the system an added advantage over the inquisitorial justice system. Inquisitorial justice system involves the court in determining facts and evidence about a case. Therefore, the system gives room for bias where the court can favor one side of the case. This is unlike the adversary system that advocates for observance of the law in determining facts about a case. Moreover, the inquisitorial system denies the accused the right of privacy. The system requires the accused to collaborate with the police and other court officials in the process of gathering evidence. The accused has no right of remaining silent throughout the process unlike in the adversary system where the accused has the right of choosing to remain silent throughout the court process. Courts in the adversary justice system act as supervisors of the actions of the prosecution and the accused and eliminate any practices that conflict with the law. The system does not grant the court the authority of supporting the prosecution against the accused. This form of fairness does not exist in the inquisitorial justice system. It is possible for the authority or the police to coerce their authority on the accused in their attempt to gather evidence against him or her. The law does not allow use of evidence that is a result of coercion of authority. Police officers are known to use excessive power in their attempt to gather evidence against victims of crime. Therefore, involving the court and the police in the process is not in the best interests of ensuring equal and just treatment for offenders (see Prasad). The adversary system becomes even stronger when looking at emerging trends in the field of law. For instance, there have been efforts to introduce the system of restorative justice in the court process. Restorative justice is an em erging trend in the court system where victims and offenders interact in the process of seeking justice. Legal procedures are not the basic requirements of punishing an offender under restorative justice. Instead, the offender must take absolute responsibility for his or her actions by convincing the victims that he or she will not repeat such an offense in the future. The system does not recognize the state as an agent that feels the effect of law breaking. It holds the notion that actions of offenders

Tristes Tropiques by Claude Levi-Strauss Essay Example for Free

Tristes Tropiques by Claude Levi-Strauss Essay Tristes Tropiques, by Claude Levi-Strauss is ostensibly a travelogue dealing with Amerindians, their native lands and their society. The actual story is more than discovery and exploration, delving into the mind of the author, a French philosopher. It is ironic that Levi-Strauss bemoans the losses that his subjects have endured when he knows that it is his society that has caused theirs to fade away. Tristes Tropiques, the Sad Tropics, relates the story of the anguish and misery caused by the introduction of Western values and mores on a non-Western group of humanity. Levi-Strauss begins this work by saying that he hates traveling and explorers.   â€Å"The first thing we see as we travel round the world is our own filth, thrown into the face of mankind,† (Levi-Strauss et al. p 24). He says that either we journey to a distant land to find the true savage, though there are precious few actually left in this world and their difference makes them impossible to know, or we are the gawking tourist looking for a reality that does not exist, if it ever did. It is this paradox that drives Levi-Strauss.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Levi-Strauss agrees to a meeting with the Tarunde Indians in their village. It is to be a ceremonial gift swap in which he gets to witness first hand the structure and social order of the group. This passage is fraught with tangible fear for outsiders had been murdered there. It is a surreal episode and told with a sense of urgency.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Yet the author goes on for pages describing a sunset at one point. Chapter after chapter delve into philosophic meandering and observations on world religions. â€Å"Or in the brief glance, heavy with patience, serenity and mutual forgiveness, that, through some involuntary understanding, one can sometimes exchange with a cat, (415) he says in closing. Perhaps there is some deep, or even metaphysical meaning to this. Or perhaps the emperor has no clothes. He takes a far too circuitous route to arrive at a vague point.          Bibliography   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Levi-Strauss, C., Weightman, D. Weightman, J. philosophy of education Essay -- essays research papers

Progressivism My personal philosophy of education is most closely related to progressivism, which is a school of thought advocating that truth is determined by function. Progressivism is an educational philosophy focused on providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary not only to survive but also to succeed in a contemporary and competitive society. William James and John Dewey are accredited for developing the characteristically American philosophy of education that is progressivism. As the name suggests, progressivism is a philosophy that is adaptable for society’s current state. It is a philosophy that promotes education aimed at helping students to develop the kind of problem solving skills that will enable them to function successfully in a competitive society. Progressivism focuses on educating students in a manner that leads them to become productive adults that adeptly function in an ever-changing world. Progressivism curriculum has a strong emphasis on problem solving and analysis, for these skills are invaluable in today’s society. Without problem solving abilities, an individual is lost and alone in the puzzling maze of society that characterizes the world today. Progressivism curriculum is centered on activities and instruction that challenge the students’ problem solving and analysis abilities in an effort to strengthen these skills. Since progressivism is influenced by contemporary society, it is only appropriate that the progressivism curric...

Effects on the American Dream, Both Positive and Negative...

Effects on the American Dream, Both Positive and Negative The editors of Forbes called on these writers: James Q. Wilson, Katherine Newman, Robert Reich, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Natwar M. Gandhi, and Charles Derber. To answer this following question: If things are so good, why do we feel so bad? The American Dream has both positive and negative effects on the country, but in the end people will ultimately create their own fates. There are many positive effects that the American Dream has such immigrant origins, to the United States. Americans have a higher standard of living, that’s why immigrants come to the United States to have freedom, self-expression, and also to have a better standard of living as well (Wilson 437). Wilson†¦show more content†¦One negative effect on the American Dream is freedom; freedom reduced authority in the United States, freedom also caused crime to spread way out of proportion. Wilson acknowledges that freedom leads to a lack of order, havi ng the power of freedom made people bring out their self- expression which made them lose their self-control to stop the bad things they were doing. Wilson states that â€Å"the expansion in personal freedom has been accompanied by a deep distrust† (Wilson 434). Wilson mentions an example of personal freedom which is: mentally ill people having freedom meant that they could not be forced to go to a clinic if they didn’t want to, which lead the mentally ill to be homeless. Derber proclaims that Americans twisted the American Dream as in using it to act selfish and commit heinous crimes. â€Å"The readings of history and anthropology†¦ give us no reason to believe that societies have built in self-preservative systems.† - Margaret Mead (Derber 411). The crimes of freedom caused â€Å"wilding† this is the word that describes the behavior Americans were showing. Derber observes that â€Å"the fear of wilding became fear of the other: those locked outsid e of the American Dream. They had not yet invaded the world most Americans felt part of, but they menaced it† (Derber 412). Wilding infected corporations and the government also to individuals of every race, class, and gender.
